Birth Marks, Sand Drawing, 2015
This ephemeral work illustrates an origination from water. The
chemical fosters all biological life and constitutes the majority of the
human body. It is a common element in creation stories and literally
refers to a watery birth.
To illustrate this primordial event, the artist crawled out of the ocean leaving deliberate traces of her path. An evolutionary narrative was created as she transitioned from a crawling to a walking position. This can be seen in the drawing as long rough marks are replaced by prints of hands, knees and feet.
The piece was created at dawn in reference to the beginning of time. The tide eventually erased the drawing leaving only an awareness of the occurrence.
